Goodbye to the 2010’s – Goodbye 2019 – Goodbye to an Icon

Tuesday, December 31st, 2019

We are closing in on the end of a decade, and Volkswagen has kept their promise in providing top of the line, quality products to their loyal consumers. Imagine at the beginning of the decade; our customers were demanding innovations like remote start and back up cameras in their vehicles. Now, we look forward to full navigation, push-button start, entertainment systems, and WiFi as additional – or standard features. We have welcomed an exterior look that has clean, sleek features with bold accents to classic models and even introduced a few new staples to our line-up. As 2020 quickly approaches, there a many more exciting changes to come and new concepts to be introduced. Instead of the old saying everything old becomes new again, Volkswagen strives to create the idea that new is new- again! With that idea in mind, major changes needed to be made, and new roads need to be paved. So, to close out a decade, it’s only appropriate we say farewell to a Volkswagen icon – the Beetle – the Bug – the Punch Buggy – Good Old Herbie the Love Bug. The last VW Beetle rolled off the production lines in late summer, and now, to close out its final year in production, Volkswagen presents ‘The Last Mile.’

In an effort to continue keeping Volkswagen some of the safest vehicles on the road Volkswagen Group of America has a new partner.

Last week Volkswagen Group of Americans joined The Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium (AVSC). The group, which includes automakers and technology companies, is focused on jointly developing standards and best practices for testing and deploying highly automated vehicles for the future.

“It’s important that the industry work together in the development of standards and best practices for automated driving,” said Wolfgang Demmelbauer-Ebner, chief engineering officer for Volkswagen’s North American Region. “That process begins with efficient testing criteria and we’re excited to begin working with the AVSC to ensure those are defined and adopted across the board.”

This is part of Volkswagen taking steps in the future of driving mobility and automated driving, the direction in which Volkswagen is looking to head in the next few years. In the past six months Volkswagen Group of America has made significant investments into AI and autonomous driving companies to make this advancement possible.

The AVSC, a program of the SAE Industry Technologies Consortia, launched in April 2019. It includes leading OEM and technology member organizations committed to the development of best practices through which AV technology can be responsibly developed, tested and adopted prior to mass deployment.

VWGoA joins Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Lyft, Toyota and Uber ATG as members of AVSC.
